Congrats!

Side note, highly recommend checking out www.evivo.com for their infant probiotic. The product was developed at UC-Davis and is backed by the Bill Gates Foundation. We used the product with our son and he slept pretty much through the night the first 4 months, no gassy, colic, or fussiness. Those are just noticeable short-term benefits, with lots of promise of long-term benefits that reduce allergies, asthma, diabeties, obesity, etc. Full disclosure, I worked for the company up until August and picked the brains of the scientists before I was willing to use the product with our son, but it works.

This would be a good use case to make sure that I have enough money in my checking:

Bills Categories + Credit Cards  = Minimum to keep in checking

This is where the old YNAB trick of leveraging future dated transactions comes in handy. If you primarily use your credit card(s) for spending and are setup to automatically pay the statement balance in full on the due date, you typically know your scheduled checking outflows for ~30 days. Once you have the exact amount and date do each scheduled outflow transaction, “enter to register”. Don’t enter any inflows until actually received and make sure your working balance stays above whatever level you deem appropriate. Personally, I like to keep it at $5k after all planned outflows over the next ~30 days will be gone. Sometimes I run it a bit lower knowing our paychecks are predictable and a transfer from Ally Bank can happen within a few days, if needed.

This sounds like a lot of work. Just make sure you keep enough in checking and put excess into savings.

I do like account groupings to get subtotals, but trying to match categories with accounts to the penny seems unnecessary.

Did you know you can just install Dropbox on your computer and you will regain access to your ynab4 files?

And you can look up your ynab4 serial number to continue using 4.

All that said, they have helped you understand how to migrate that file to financier as well.

Interesting. Mobile access without data is a deal breaker for me. We use Ting for our mobile phone service so rely heavily on WiFi. I want to be able to enter transactions while out and about, while being able to sync once I return to WiFi.

Prefinancier debt is for the portion of your starting credit card balance you can’t pay down. If you can pay it in full, change the starting balance category to income and delete the pre financier debt category. If you can’t, keep budgeting to the category until it reaches zero.

@Joel, everything I've done so far has been reinventing the wheel for a small screen. Adding functionality to the app as a whole will be a little more complicated, but not insurmountable. Database format modifications have to be done carefully to avoid causing conflict if @Alex adds something on his end down the road.

Right now I see 3 potentially overlapping options:
  • Attempt to build scheduled transactions into the main app, and submit a merge request for @Alex to approve. The benefit with this would be that he would not have to do the coding, but a crash-course in angularjs would be required on my end. My code would also have to pass the gauntlet of approval.
  • Build scheduled transactions into the mobile app first. I have considered this heavily since I know my way around the mobile app code a lot better. I could figure out all of the mechanics under the hood, and then give @Alex the schematic to implement in the main app. Or, just let the mobile app handle scheduled transactions by itself...
  • Build a small separate tool for managing scheduled transactions outside the main and mobile apps. I'm not sure if this would be any cleaner or easier than simply building the functionality into either app, but it's an option.

Scheduled transactions is the last piece of the puzzle for me as well, so it's going to happen someway/somehow.

Fantastic. With a newborn at home, I haven't had time to do any testing since it would require running both ynab4 and financier side-by-side with not enough time, but i think scheduled transactions would be enough for me to rip the bandaid off and switch completely!

Do you plan to eventually allow viewing of historical transactions within each category and within each account? To be honest, I use that capability of the mobile app more than most other features.
