Other / Invitation to Collaborate: Financier User Guide
« on: January 12, 2017, 04:33:05 PM »
So, before the holidays I sketched out a rough (very rough) outline of a user guide for Financier. @Alex suggested I solicit more help on the forums and since I haven't touched the guide since then, I figured that would be a good idea. If you're a nerd like me and would like to help document Financier, let me know and I'll send you the share link.

Feature Requests / Goals - Deluxe
« on: December 15, 2016, 11:14:07 AM »
Throwing out ideas for goals, if/when they're implemented.

Basically there are three inputs the user can select (besides scheduled transactions): Budgeted amount, target category balance, and date. You can set goals with up to two of these.
  • Budgeted amount only: Fixed Funding type of goal. Budget $X each month.
  • Balance only: "Top up." Budget $X - current category balance.
  • Date only: DOES NOT COMPUTE... Can't really do anything with this one.
  • Balance and date: The program calculates the budgeted amount for you. The option to make this recurring would be a plus.
  • Budget and balance: Fixed funding with cap; for example, $50/month up to $200 balance.
  • Budget and date: This is where things get weird. I would like to see a "Christmas shopping" type of category calculated off of total funding, but I'm not sure how the innards of that would work. It's the only potential goal type that would have to look back at past months.
I would love to see these on an interactive setup screen--type in one or two parameters, and have Financier tell you what the budgeted amount would be. If the user enters a date first, the other fields should be bolded and a message should appear stating that more information is needed. Once two parameters are entered, the third should be greyed out and inactive.

The only other goal type I'd really like to see is Multiple Goals per category. It would probably be easiest to calculate this from the scheduled transactions. Maybe make that a checkbox option on the same screen: "Automatically calculate based on upcoming Scheduled Transactions." I would want it to look forward 12 months and figure out the minimum funding amount that would let me meet all obligations in that category.

Once the user sets up goals, the numbers would be applied using a "Quick Budget by Goals" option.

Feature Requests / Quick budget - average for the last 6 months/year
« on: November 28, 2016, 12:43:48 PM »
Can we get a longer window on the quick-budget options? I have a 4 month old baby so the "average of last 3 months' budget" option isn't super representative.  ;)

Bug Reports / Transaction dates not syncing correctly to mobile
« on: November 23, 2016, 09:44:33 AM »
I just fired up the mobile version for the first time in a month or so. Also the first time since migrating my YNAB 4 budget. I noticed that all my transaction dates are one day earlier than those on the computer interface. This may be the same error you discussed on the blog, I'm not sure. I added a transaction on my phone dated 11/23 and it showed up on the computer correctly as 11/23. Then I deleted it and added it on the computer. The transaction on my phone is now dated 11/22.

Feature Requests / Report filters

It would be great to filter the net worth report by account or time frame. Once the other reports are up they should (eventually) be filterable by time frame, account, payee, and/or category as appropriate.

Feedback / Tutorial section?

A tutorial/getting started/how-to section might be handy for newcomers trying to figure out how Financier works. If/when you post instructional blog entries, those can be linked there too.

Feature Requests / Debt payment wizard
« on: October 26, 2016, 08:42:02 AM »
For users paying off credit card or overdraft debt, the payoff system in Financier can be a little confusing. To help with that, add a button to the credit card account register that will calculate how much a user can pay at that time.

[Debt Payment =    ]  [Reconcile Account]
Put the button in the blank space next to the Reconcile Account button. When the user clicks it, Financier does the following calculation: |Credit card balance - Pre-Financier Debt category balance - overbudgeted amount - overspent amount| = payment. The number can be displayed on the button itself and then cleared when a transaction/transfer is entered or when the user navigates away from that account. (Actually, you could have it continuously displayed and auto-updated, but it would have to recalculate every time the account or category is updated. I'm not a programmer, so I don't know whether that's a problem, but it seems like it could slow things down.)

If the overbudgeted amount or overspent amount is nonzero, give the user an alert: "WARNING! Your debt payment has been reduced due to overspending and/or overbudgeting. Correct these errors on the budget screen to ensure your budget is accurate and reliable."

Thoughts? Modifications?
