Title: Integration with Pocket Sense
Post by: Joel on October 24, 2016, 02:52:32 PM
For several years now, I've utilized Pocket Sense to download the OFX files from all my bank accounts and import into YNAB4. My daily routine is to open the pocket sense screen, type my password, and Pocket Sense proceeds to download all of my transactions from my 8+ accounts for the last 30 days, and then it opens YNAB4. YNAB4 is smart enough to ignore transactions that were already imported, and only imports new transactions in their respective accounts. The new transactions are matched with whatever transactions I had manually entered, and then I just approve them. This has been a great way for me to improve my reconciliation process. Instead of logging into each website individually every few days, I simply download  transactions through Pocket Sense whenever I open my budget. The once per month, I reconcile all my accounts. I have yet to be out of sync in the 4+ years* I have been using Pocket Sense. It has been very helpful in catching transactions that my wife forgot to enter.

With that said, it does take a bit of time to get everything setup properly. And there are certain banks that it does not work with. I've actually switched banks and stopped using certain credit cards in order to use Pocket Sense.

The Pocket Sense web site is: https://sites.google.com/site/pocketsense/home/msmoneyfixp1

My hope is that Financier eventually adds the ability to import .OFX transactions. When it does that, it would be great if already imported transactions were ignored, newly imported transactions were matched with manually input transactions and required approval, and it would be great if I could configure Financier to open as soon as I download and open the .ofx file.

*Side note, I was shocked to realize that I setup Pocket Sense back in August of 2012! I did not think it had been that long!

Yes please to Pocket Sense compatibility down the road!  It makes it so much easier to avoid missed transactions and keep accounts updated.  I just started using it this year after initially thinking the setup looked too complicated but it really only took an hour or so to get it going and since then has saved me loads of time.

I had never encountered Pocket Sense until now. This is exactly what I've been looking for as far as a one-stop way to download all of my OFX files. Thanks!

I can't get setup.py to run on my Windows 10 box. Can't figure out why...

Did you download and install Active Python?

The link to download is here: https://sites.google.com/site/pocketsense/home/msmoneyfixp1/p2

I did, yes. Double clicking the setup.py briefly opened and closed a window and then nothing.

Weird. I never had any issues setting it up, but it's been a long while. Was it on Active Pyton 2.7.x or earlier? There's a note that it has not been tested on the newer 3.x platform.

I did originally have 3.5 installed so removed it but still no dice.

I'll try again later.

Hmmm.  Wish I had an idea for troubleshooting.  I remember a couple hiccups at setup but it's been too long since I first did it and I can't remember what I did now.  Hope you can get it sorted!
