Title: Check numbers
Post by: Joel on October 27, 2016, 01:09:34 PM
Is this also in the works? I remember there being a huge uproar about check numbers with nYNAB. I personally don't use them, so it would be nice if that column was an option that could be hidden on an account-by-account basis.

I think the biggest reason for the uproar was due to the check number field being fully programmed and functional, and they hid it with some CSS for an unknown reason. When some savvy users figured out how to unhide it, YNAB yanked it completely. I don't use the check number field either, but you'll win the hearts and minds of a number of users if you add it. That, and running balance.

It's just a string, right? Doesn't so much of anything?

It's just a string, and it makes searching & sorting easier (I believe).

It was recommended to put the check number in the memo field in nYNAB, but without a solid search mechanism it made things difficult for some people.

Wait! People still use checks?  ;D

Yup, some people still use checks. And hiding the check number in the memo field caused uproar.

If the column can be easily added (and hidden), it will attract a market of users that are completely neglected by nYNAB.

I would like a check number field that I can show/hide on demand.

When my checks clear my bank, they show up as Check 304 for the payee.  I go to my bank online, pull up the check image, and pull the actual payee information.  But I'd like the check number available so I can easily find the transaction again if I get into a dispute with someone that I've written a check to.

I write 3 or 4 checks a month.  Lately I've been writing more because I've had some work done on the house, and I've paid the contractor with checks.

It is NOT a high priority, but it's something I would like.
