Announcements / Server maintenance
« on: December 17, 2018, 03:25:56 PM »
Hello all,

It's quiet around here! But, Financier's maintenance and support continues as always! I have performed some server maintenance today (with no downtime) to upgrade various versions of software that Financier depends on.

Nothing should change or be different, but let me know if you notice anything weird!

Thanks
Alex

Hi everyone,

This release includes security fixes (nonce + modernized CSP headers), a new French locale, and a small Spanish typo fix.

Enjoy! Let me know if you have any issues.

Announcements / Scheduled Maintenance - 03/23/18
« on: March 22, 2018, 12:16:30 PM »
Hi everyone!

Tomorrow, this Friday (March 23rd, 2018), at 5:30PM CT, Financier will be down for maintenance.

The reason for the downtime is to migrate off of Docker Cloud which we are using for container management. Docker Cloud is being shut down in 2 months by an announcement made a couple days ago.

The downtime will last anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours.

There may be a slight performance boost by this change. This change also completely separates staging and production at all levels minus the Digital Ocean organization account. Docker Cloud will be replaced by a solution with Docker Compose without a management solution.

This will be the last service that Financier depends on that is at risk to be shut down at some time in the future. After the migration is complete, the "weakest link" will be Digital Ocean (which is many times over more dependable to exist in the future relative to Docker Cloud).

Staging has already been migrated without any large issues.

As always, because Financier works offline, your budget will continue to be accessible. The only difference is it will not sync until the maintenance is complete. :D

Basically now for the next hour, DigitalOcean is configuring the server to mitigate against Spectre and Meltdown. Thanks for understanding! Full text below:

Hi there,

DigitalOcean is working to mitigate the industry-wide security vulnerabilities known as Meltdown and Spectre. As part of our mitigation efforts, we have planned an ongoing maintenance that will affect all Droplets in all regions. During the one hour window noted above, we will be performing reboots on a small portion of our fleet. This will result in your Droplets, listed below, being offline for the duration of the reboot.

We have dedicated all available resources to this maintenance to ensure your Droplets are back online as quickly as possible. We anticipate a maximum downtime of fifteen minutes for impacted Droplets, but expect most Droplets to be back online much faster. We are primarily performing this maintenance during business hours so we can maximize our available resources for issues that might arise and continue to maintain service levels for our users.

You can read more about the reason for these reboots here: https://blog.digitalocean.com/a-message-about-intel-security-findings

This reboot will not automatically patch your Droplet, you should follow this guide to do so, and we encourage you to continue to update as more mitigation patches are pushed into repositories: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-protect-your-server-against-the-meltdown-and-spectre-vulnerabilities

If you have any questions, please reply to this email and our support team will be happy to assist you.

Kind Regards,
DigitalOcean

Release Notes / 1.6.0 Cursor jump-to-end
« on: January 21, 2018, 03:24:14 PM »
Bugfixes

Features

Non-frontend stuff
  • Fixed subscription end emails being sent, and much more detailed emails on reason why subscription was cancelled (failed payment, no payment information, set to cancel at end of current subscription period)
  • Tweaks for mobile-friendly changes to main website (https://financier.io) and removed warning on active development since it's been stable for the last year

Small release, but the cool part of this release is it's the first with community-contributed changes! Thanks @asromzek and Jamie Madill!

Announcements / 1/17 Planned downtime
« on: January 17, 2018, 10:24:06 AM »
I am planning some downtime for this evening, at around 8:00 PM CST for maintenance. The downtime will last up to 15 minutes.

In this time I will be changing the SSL certificate provider to Let's Encrypt, which will include automatic renewal so that it doesn't have to be manually renewed every year.

This will remove any chance that there are SSL certificate expiry issues in the future if I forget to renew a decade from now. ;)

As always, you should only expect a disruption in the syncing mechanism or accessing Financier on devices that have not visited app.financier.io before since Financier works completely offline in your browser!

I will post updates when I start and when changes are complete. :)

Announcements / 📝 I need YOU - To help write docs!
« on: January 12, 2018, 05:45:11 PM »
At the request from many people, I am hosting a wiki site for Financier documentation.

This is an experiment. I'm pretty bad with explaining through docs stuff like this, so I'm looking for help! :)

Anyone can edit and contribute. I have a beginnings of a "start guide" but it's really rough in it's current state.

Worth noting is each page has a "Talk" section (see the tab) if you want to have a discussion about any particular page without making changes.
Also worth noting is the wiki site supports uploading images.

Wiki site 📝 docs.financier.io

Anyways - I might be tinkering with this, but I'd absolutely LOVE help from people! ❤️ Please let me know if you can help out!

Announcements / CouchDB maintenance & backups
« on: January 12, 2018, 01:28:47 PM »
During lunch, the CouchDB database (the thing that holds all of your budget data) was recently updated to the latest version for security and performance improvements.

No downtime was expected & nothing user-facing was expected to change.

In other news, I've made automated backups of the forum post/topic data on a nightly basis.

In more backup related news, while Financier (the app) has always had nightly backups to multiple redundant locations, I may be introducing live backups soon with a completely separate data backup method for more redundancy and data durability in case of corruption of the nightly backup.

Thanks all!

Other / Unofficial Financier Tools
« on: January 12, 2018, 01:20:58 PM »
Hi all,

So, we have a couple Financier-related, unofficial tools from the awesome community. I figured I'd start a list so they won't get lost! Please feel free to let me know if I miss something or something new comes out!

Announcements / Financier frontend repository is now open sourced!
« on: August 28, 2017, 07:02:51 PM »
Please see here:

https://gitlab.com/financier/financier/

I have decided to use the MIT license with Financier. This is very permissive to the point that you could (if you wanted to) use Financier on a commercial basis! :)

In any case, please enjoy. I'll answer some basic questions, but it should be self explanatory.

One cool thing - docs for Financier are available here: https://app.financier.io/docs/ HOWEVER - Please note that you need to go a hard refresh (hold COMMAND on Mac and click refresh) - otherwise the Service Worker for app.financier.io will supersede it.

Blog post to follow once the dust settles!

Announcements / Public Financier source
« on: July 10, 2017, 09:53:29 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm thinking of the best way to release Financier's core.

I was thinking of releasing the core without an open source license, and then adding later.

I might release other stuff later too, like the payment API stuff and couchdb config.

Would you guys contribute to Financier if I released the source code?

Release Notes / 1.5.1 - Outflow inspector
« on: February 01, 2017, 05:25:32 PM »
Hello everyone!

After a long break, I finally have a new release ready.

Nothing too huge, but a couple small things. :) I plan to make some smaller releases like this in between larger releases (like mobile/scheduled transactions/import).

The largest is the outflow inspector. Simply click on any outflow amounts on the budget screen, or click on the income amount in the month overview to inspect the transactions that make up that total.

An example is attached below.

While you cannot currently click a transaction to view it in the register (this will come later), this is a large improvement in inspecting and debugging your budget.

Further changes include:

  • Translations have been updated
  • The name of the budget now appears in the browser's title bar

Thanks for waiting! Stay tuned for more.

Announcements / Status of Financier development
« on: January 19, 2017, 07:04:37 PM »
Nothing to report. Life is busy (isn't it always). No changes in commitment to Financier though, but for those of you that aren't familiar, development occurs in cycles. :parrot:

I don't know about you guys, but I am loving using Financier daily for my personal budget.

Scheduled transactions is 40% done, I'd say. Lots of work on the underlying sync mechanism to make conflict resolution better.

I am hoping to get a minor release with bug fixes and translation updates sooner rather than later.

Don't be afraid of the quiet in the forums, lol. :)
