Using Ting for Cell Phone Service
« on: October 24, 2016, 03:24:37 PM »
During the last month, I finally decided to pull the trigger and leave AT&T. I absolutely hate the new pricing structure for phones, and since I plan to buy our future phones outright through Apple, I've decided it's finally time to pull the plug. We switched over to Ting earlier this month. Our bill is looking to be around $60 per month - down from $130 per month.

Service isn't quite as good, but seems just fine when you consider the savings.

Has anyone else switched over to Ting?

I haven't looked at Ting, but I will have to check it out. I'm currently paying for one line on Cricket at $35 unlimited talk, text, 2.5 GB of data. So far I haven't noticed any difference in quality of service.

I was also looking into Cricket as well. The main reason I did not choose Cricket was because they are now owned by AT&T, and I'm afraid it is their loss leader to force our all these small competitors and then jack their rates back up.

I like T-Mobile. Cheap if you use a good amount of data, free tethering, and free international data/text.

Ting uses the T-Mobile and Sprint networks... depending on whether or not you choose a cdma or gsm phone.

I moved to Ting about 18 months ago. The wife wanted to stay with Verizon due to her much greater volume of voice and text usage related to her job... her data usage is minimal. My bill averages $28 and hers $62. Her 4G coverage is better than mine in some situations and when that happens I just ask her to fire up her phone's hot spot and it all works out just fine. Voice calls seem to be equal in all respects on both devices.

Both my wife and I switched to Cricket a few years ago and their (now) $30 plan, neither of us go over the 1GB of data as we are always on Wifi. As long as you never have to deal with customer support its been great.

About a year ago I picked up a Nexus 5x and recently a Pixel XL and have been running on Project Fi. Its cheaper, better quality (switching between 3 networks and wifi) and has excellent customer service. The fact that they reimburse unused data makes me happy and now with their family plan we can share that data, i'll be switching her over soon. If you are willing to live in an Android world its fantastic service. I highly recommend it.

I've been using Ting for over a year, my last several bills have been just under 33 dollars.

I was paying like $26/month but I started using more data after Pokemon Go came out. Usually I just do all my data stuff on wifi and keep it under 100 MB a month on cellular.

I'm kind of an edge case though, I barely talk on the phone and the majority of people I text also have iPhones.

The free data and SMS in >100 countries is what sold me on Tmobile. I just came back from a three week international business trip and the free data was key. I was in a country where they barely have 3G so my free data was 2G, but I'm used to traveling to places where this is the case. Uber had just started in the country 6 months ago and it was great to be able to get around and to text my colleagues as needed on ETAs and such.
