Account groupings
« on: February 22, 2017, 09:36:35 AM »
As we have begun saving up money for a house downpayment, I've recently begun chasing bank account sign-up bonuses. I've also been travel hacking with credit cards (most recently the Chase Sapphire Reserves, Chase Sapphire Preferred, and Chase Freedom Unlimited). With all that going on, I've realized I have a lot of accounts!

In YNAB4, I've used the ability to "close" an account as a way to segregate the accounts I'm not currently using. What I've realized is that accomplishes what I want, but what I would really like to do is be able to designate account groupings that can be expanded/collapsed. With YNAB4, I have my checking account and my actively used credit cards open, while all other cards are closed so that they can be grouped together. The closed accounts include my savings account, any credit cards I don't want to use at the moment, and all the bank accounts I have money stashed in to earn sign-up bonuses. However, I would much rather group the accounts into several groups. I've put together an example of how I would group them below. An added benefit would be grouping accounts in a way that the subtotals are meaningful.

For the temporary bank accounts, once they are closed, I will end up moving all of the transactions to my main checking account and deleting the account. I will do something similar for any credit cards that are only opened to earn the sign-up bonus as well. So at the end of the day, I could eventually delete 4 credit cards and 10 temporary bank accounts. But even then, I would be left with 15 accounts...

Would anyone else see a benefit in being able to group accounts how you want in the account sidebar?

Hehe. Definitely a power user feature. :)

For now, I guess you could prefix the groups with emojis. That'd at least provide some level of grouping in my mind.

Totally. I just order them in a meaningful way. But figured I would throw it out there in case you were messing with that area and it was something easy :)
